Mother’s incontinence as a result of treatment during labour

Our client went into labour with her first child, but the attending midwife failed to remove or deflate the balloon of a Foley catheter that had been inserted.

The catheter was forcibly expelled just before her son was born, causing damage to her urethra. As a result, she is left with permanent incontinence and she required a Caesarean section for her second child’s birth to minimise further damage to her pelvic floor and urethra.

She received over £50,000 in compensation and an apology from the treating hospital, as well as assurance that a new bladder care policy was introduced to avoid recurrence in other cases of the injury she had suffered.
