Tim Palmer

Director of best practice

Tim is director of best practice and a member of the firm’s executive board and strategy board. The best practice team combines Penningtons Manches Cooper’s compliance, risk management and knowledge functions which focus on keeping the firm safe and continuing to help ‘make it better’.

Between 2010 and 2022, Tim headed the firm’s private individuals division, which provides high-quality advice on tax, family law and succession issues as well as a broad range of other services enabling private clients to achieve their personal goals. As a partner in the medical negligence and personal injury team, he represented claimants for more than 20 years, successfully concluding many cases through negotiated settlements and, where necessary, at trial.

With my team of expert compliance and regulatory lawyers, knowledge lawyers and risk management specialists, I advise and support the firm in meeting its legal and regulatory obligations. I work with the firm’s management team to ensure that these matters are constantly at the front of mind both in day-to-day activities and in our strategic planning.

Tim is accredited as a mediator by the Centre For Dispute Resolution and has been on the approved solicitors lists of the Spinal Injuries Association and Headway. He has also been a member of the Law Society’s medical negligence panel, the AvMA specialist medical negligence panel and the Legal Aid Agency’s review panel. In 2016, Tim was appointed an honorary AvMA panel member, which is awarded to selected former AvMA panel members in order to recognise the longstanding and significant contribution that an individual has made in the field of clinical negligence and patient safety as well as to the work of AvMA.

Sophia Pole

Finance director

Sophia joined Penningtons Manches Cooper in 2018, initially managing the firm’s central finance and reporting division before being appointed finance director in 2021. She is responsible for the financial management of the firm, overseeing all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, while ensuring compliance with financial and tax regulations.

Her expertise in financial planning and analysis supports strategic decision-making and contributes to the firm’s overall performance. Sophia brings extensive experience from senior finance roles across diverse sectors, including cybersecurity, information technology services and solutions, commercial real estate, and professional services. She has delivered EMEA group reporting for global multinationals, implemented accounting systems, and led statutory reporting and tax compliance projects.

I believe financial leadership goes beyond the numbers – it’s about upholding trust, ensuring compliance, and creating a foundation where legal excellence can thrive. I provide compliant financial stewardship that safeguards the firm today, while positioning it for smarter and stronger growth in the future.

Sophia Pole, Finance director

Sophia trained with RSM Tenon and qualified as a chartered certified accountant in 2009. She holds a first-class honours degree in financial management and is a graduate of Kazan Physics and Mathematics College. Her analytical approach and sector-spanning experience make her a key contributor to the firm’s financial strategy and operational resilience.

Adam Nichols

HR director

As HR director, Adam leads the HR function and works closely with the CEO to deliver the people-focused elements of the firm’s strategy. He is also a member of the firm’s executive and strategy boards, contributing to the wider leadership and direction of the firm.

Prior to joining Penningtons Manches Cooper in November 2022, Adam spent a number of years at a Magic Circle law firm where he held a variety of senior roles. These included head of HR for Asia and global head of partner advisory, giving him deep experience in international people strategy .

As part of the firm’s leadership team, I focus on driving collaboration and connection throughout the firm, supporting all to deliver our strategy and championing an inclusive culture that ensures talented people can thrive.

Adam works in close collaboration with partners and directors across the firm to champion its values, foster high-performing teams, and support a culture of engagement and innovation. He plays a key role in shaping initiatives that attract and retain top talent, while helping to sustain the firm’s distinctive culture.

Adam is an internationally minded professional with a focus on supporting the firm’s growth ambitions through the continued development of its people and culture.

As a member of both the strategic and executive boards, Jonathan plays a key role in contributing to the strategic direction and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the firm. He is directly responsible for leading and executing the firm’s IT, sustainability, and administrative support strategies, with a strong focus on driving collaboration and efficiencies across all central functions.

Appointed as the firm’s first chief operating officer in April 2021, Jonathan brings a wealth of experience from his previous board-level positions at Intelligent Office and Swiss Post Solutions, performing both CEO and COO roles. With over 25 years of experience in the outsourcing sector, ten of which were dedicated to working within legal and professional services businesses, Jonathan has a proven track record in implementing and delivering services across various industries, internationally.

I consistently drive operational excellence and strategic growth, working to embed organisational change that is aligned with the firm’s strategic intent. My passion lies in building high-performing teams that deliver exceptional services and sustainable results by continuously improving working practices and delivering positive outcomes for our people, our teams and the firm.

Rachel is the director of global business development and marketing at Penningtons Manches Cooper. She leads a dedicated team of business development and marketing professionals, driving the firm’s UK and international growth initiatives.

As a member of both the executive board and strategy board, Rachel works closely with the firm’s CEO to shape and implement the firm’s international strategy. She also sits on the responsible business committee, supporting the firm’s ambition to be recognised as the most human law firm. In this role she provides direction and support to help deliver the firm’s goals across its social impact, diversity, equality and inclusion, wellbeing, and environmental working groups.

It is a pleasure to lead such a talented marketing and business development team. I am proud of our approach at putting clients at the heart of everything we do and supporting our partners in delivering an exceptional service and experience for our clients.

Rachel Dawes, Global business development and marketing director

Rachel joined the firm in October 2022, having previously been the global head of business development for the energy sector at an international law firm. There she was responsible for the planning and delivery of the global energy strategy across all regions, and for ensuring the engagement of more than 1,500 energy lawyers.

Before her career in the legal sector, Rachel was head of global operations for the International Project Finance Association, an international, independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and representing the interests of private sector companies involved in PPP, PFI and project finance for infrastructure and energy projects worldwide.
