Sarah is a senior associate in Penningtons Manches Cooper’s commercial real estate team in London. Her client base includes institutional investors, private companies, property funds, charities, small businesses and individuals, reflecting her broad expertise in handling diverse non-contentious real estate matters.

Her practice includes complex development projects, acquisitions and disposals and real estate finance. In particular, Sarah has a great deal of experience acting for both landlords and tenants in leasing matters and has a specific interest in offices, retail and social real estate.

I enjoy working on a wide variety of transactions, from telecommunications agreements to development projects, especially those that involve complex legal issues. Richard Mildren

Senior associate

Richard is a senior associate in the travel claims department in the Guildford office. He advises clients on a broad range of personal injury and medical negligence claims, including claims against tour operators, foreign insurers and local authorities.

The types of medical negligence claims that Richard deals with include orthopaedic, spinal, brain and psychological injuries arising from medical negligence by private clinicians, GPs and NHS trusts. He also assists with claims for personal injury resulting from road traffic accidents, including uninsured and untraced drivers through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, accidents at work, occupiers liability, public liability, including defective products, Highways Act claims, and criminal injuries involving the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

I am passionate about assisting my clients to not only achieve the best possible outcome in terms of compensation, but also to feel that they are fully supported throughout the course of the claim. I enjoy getting to know my clients so that I can represent them to the best of my ability.

Richard Mildren, Senior associate

Richard also supports and promotes the team in terms of risk and compliance. Having qualified as a solicitor in 2007, he has years of experience, particularly in relation to complex and high-value claims for serious orthopaedic and spinal injuries, and will go above and beyond to achieve the best possible outcome for his clients. Richard joined the firm in January 2025, having previously worked for a south coast law firm for almost 20 years where he had been a director.

Settling a claim for in excess of £2 million for a young male who sustained a brain injury and serious orthopaedic injuries as a result of a road traffic accident.

Spinal injury settlement

Obtaining a settlement of £1.25 million for a young female who sustained serious spinal injuries which limited her ability to work, following a road traffic accident.

Traumatic brain injury

Achieving a settlement of £1 million for a female who sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of being knocked off a horse by a motorcyclist.

Motor Insurers’ Bureau appeal

Successfully appealing a decision by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau on behalf of a client who was injured by an untraced motorist. At first instance, the claim was refused but was subsequently allowed following an appeal.

Unprovoked attack tribunal claim

Successfully appealing a decision of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority at tribunal in relation to the amount of compensation offered to the victim of an unprovoked attack. The victim sustained a brain injury and psychological symptoms.

Severe motorbike accident injuries

Agreeing a settlement at a joint settlement meeting of £1.1 million for a female motorbike passenger who sustained severe orthopaedic injuries following an accident where she was thrown from the motorbike.

Emma Connaughton

Emma is a senior associate in the real estate team, based in Birmingham, with extensive experience of advising clients across the retail, office, and industrial sectors throughout the UK.

Her practice includes the acquisition and disposal of freehold and leasehold investment properties, leasing arrangements, asset management, and borrower-side finance. Emma also plays a key role in corporate M&A transactions, offering strategic property advice and managing complex land acquisition matters, including conditional contracts, overage agreements, and unconditional sales and purchases.

Joanna Wylie

Senior associate

Joanna is a solicitor in the travel law team with extensive experience of handling foreign personal injury and insurance claims. She is a senior litigator of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) and is a member of PEOPIL (Pan European Organization of Personal Injury Lawyers.

She is equally comfortable handling claimant and defendant claims and has managed a wide range of high value cases both in the UK and abroad. These include claims against tour operators, foreign insurers and local authorities and a significant number of ski accident and road traffic accident claims. She has also developed a particular niche for handling accident claims in Spain and representing minors.

Joanna Wylie, Senior associate

Joanna joined Penningtons Manches Cooper in 1999 and was promoted to the role of senior case manager in 2005 before qualifying as a solicitor in 2010. She is involved with the supervision of junior members of the team to help them widen their experience and achieve their goals.

Elephant attack during safari

Securing £200,000 from a tour operator for a holidaymaker trampled by an elephant while on safari in Tanzania despite liability being denied.

Compensation for facial injuries

Achieving a substantial settlement for a claimant who sustained lasting facial injuries when her bicycle’s front wheel detached due to a manufacturing defect. Proceedings against the manufacturer had to be issued outside the Spanish jurisdiction.

Balloon accident in Turkey

Representing a UK holidaymaker who was seriously injured in a balloon accident in Turkey. After a dispute over jurisdiction, the case eventually resulted in a six figure sum being awarded to our client, including a substantial insurer’s outlay.

24-hour care for skier

Acting for a skier who suffered a fracture dislocation at C4/5 and a compression fracture of D5 in Austria and needs 24-hour care to assist with daily tasks.

Serious boat yard accident

Representing a client injured in a boat yard accident when his stored boat fell off its fixings and he landed on a wooden joist. He needed several operations and had significant nerve damage. The claim was settled for £350,000.

Edward White

Senior associate

Ed is a senior associate in the marine, trade and aviation team in London. He is a dry shipping specialist who has advised and acted for owners, charterers and P&I clubs across a broad range of contentious and non-contentious contractual matters.

He has experience running international arbitrations seated in London, Singapore and Hong Kong. He also regularly represents clients in English Commercial Court proceedings. Ed regularly acts for both owners and charterers in charterparty disputes, including in relation to off-hire, demurrage, unsafe ports, speed and performance, port fines and bunker quality disputes.

I am a dry shipping specialist with a particular expertise in offshore charterparties. I provide clear, practical and commercially driven advice on a range of shipping contracts and contractual disputes, and have extensive experience of international arbitration in both Singapore and London.

Edward White, Senior associate

Ed has also advised on and acted for clients in disputes arising under bills of lading, transhipment agreements, ship management agreements, and shipbuilding contracts and sub-contracts. He has particular expertise in charterparties for offshore support vessels and regularly advises owners on the drafting and negotiation of commercial terms. Ed has worked from both the London and Singapore offices during his time with the firm. He also has spent time on secondment at an International Group P&I club in Tokyo.

Harriet Vidot

Senior associate

Harriet is a senior associate in the commercial dispute resolution team in London. She acts for corporates, from start-ups, scale-ups and VC-backed enterprises to large multi-nationals, as well as members’ organisations and individuals based in the UK and overseas.

She advises on a wide variety of commercial and financial services disputes, most of which have a multi-jurisdictional or international element. Harriet regularly deals with banking and financial litigation, contractual disputes, shareholder disputes, intellectual property, freezing injunctions, jurisdictional issues and overseas enforcement. She also brings her expertise to the firm’s corporate, commercial, employment, tax and private wealth teams.

Sarah is a senior associate in the contentious private client team in London. Her extensive experience spans a broad range of private client matters, with a particular focus on contentious trust and estate issues, as well as wealth management for high-net-worth individuals and families.

She is experienced in dealing with a variety of trust, wills, and estate disputes including handling breach of trust claims against trustees and executors, applications to remove and replace trustees and executors, blessing applications, and challenges to wills. Her expertise includes handling complex multi-jurisdictional disputes with cross-border components.

Sarah Sussman, Senior associate (New Zealand qualified)

Before joining Penningtons Manches Cooper, Sarah practiced in New Zealand and the Cayman Islands to gain international and offshore legal experience. She has acted as lead counsel in the High Court and junior counsel in the Court of Appeal of New Zealand. In the Cayman Islands Sarah has appeared as junior counsel in the Grand Court and Court of Appeal. She is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, and, additionally, admitted to practice in the Cayman Islands. Her deep industry insight allows her to consistently achieve great results for her clients.
